Athletic history
Born in Ann Arbor and raised in the Western suburbs of Chicago, Dr. Mayo’s enthusiasm for sports took root at a young age. He began playing hockey at Yost Arena, the University of Michigan Wolverines’ home rink, later joining AAA Hockey teams such as the Chicago Mission, Chicago Chill, and Team Illinois. This was followed by a stint with the Junior A Hockey team, the Dubuque Thunderbirds.
Education & training
This passion for sports dovetailed perfectly with his academic pursuits, leading him to a career in orthopedic surgery. Dr. Mayo attended the University of Illinois Chicago for his medical education, where he dedicated a year to orthopedic research at the nationally recognized Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush University Medical Center. He also completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the same institution, earning the position of Chief Resident and winner of the Leo Weinstein Award for Excellence in Patient Care as well as the Robert D. Ray Orthopaedic Research Award. He further distinguished himself as an American Orthopaedic Association (AOA) Emerging Leader and provided medical care for the NCAA Division I University of Illinois Chicago athletic teams.
Seeking advanced specialization, Dr. Mayo completed an adult and adolescent sports medicine fellowship at the University of Connecticut, a premier fellowship in the country. Under the guidance of national experts in orthopedic sports medicine, he refined his surgical expertise and conducted groundbreaking research in shoulder, knee, and elbow surgery. He also had the opportunity to serve as assistant team physician for the NCAA Division I Sports programs at UConn, including Football, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s ice hockey, women’s field hockey, women’s basketball, lacrosse, and the 2023 National Championship winning Men’s Basketball team.

In addition, he has contributed to more than 10 textbook chapters and has presented his research over 180 times at national and international conferences.
Dr. Mayo has also received multiple recognitions for patient care. He was named a Hour Detroit Top Doctor in 2025 for both Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine and has been recognized as a Zocdoc Patient Choice Award recipient.
