Care Philosophy

The Total Recovery Pathway

My philosophy of care is built on a single, uncompromising goal: returning my patients to their peak level of activity with a durable, long-term result. I believe that a successful surgical outcome is not an accident—it is the result of a precise, evidence-based partnership between the surgeon, the patient, and the recovery team.

1. Treating the Patient, Not Just the Image

In an era of high-tech diagnostics, many providers focus solely on an MRI or X-ray report. My approach is different. While I utilize the state-of-the-art imaging available on-site at Synergy Health (Mendelson Orthopedics), the most important diagnostic tools remain the clinical physical examination and the patient’s personal history.

I prioritize understanding your unique biomechanical symptoms and your specific goals—whether that is returning to high level sports or simply enjoying a pain-free round of golf. We treat the person, not just the pathology.

2. The Total Recovery Pathway: A Three-Pillar Approach

I believe that surgery is only 50% of the outcome. To achieve an elite-level result, we must optimize the “Biological Window” of healing. My Total Recovery Pathway ensures that every facet of your journey is managed:

  • Nonoperative options: I always consider solutions ranging from non-invasive, low risk options such as Physical Therapy, braces, and medications prior to surgery for most conditions.
  • Precision Surgery: Utilizing the latest anatomic techniques, including BEAR® ACL restorations, double-row rotator cuff repairs, and custom 3D-printed shoulder replacements.
  • Perioperative Nutrition: Implementing a research-backed nutritional protocol to prime your body for tissue healing and graft integration before and after surgery.
  • Mental Readiness: Going through an injury and surgery can be mentally taxing. Dr. Mayo encourages his athletes to focus on the metal recovery and mental readiness to return to sports in addition to the physical aspects.
  • The PT Alliance: Maintaining a direct, face-to-face line of communication with our on-site physical therapists to ensure your functional milestones are met with surgical precision.

3. Surgical Necessity & Shared Decision-Making

As a Revision Specialist, I am often the second or third surgeon a patient sees. This perspective has taught me that the best surgery is the one that is truly necessary and expertly executed.

I acknowledge that treatment suitability varies. For many, a non-surgical approach involving specialized Physical Therapy, Laser Therapy, or Chiropractic care is the correct path. For those requiring complex reconstruction, we utilize our private Outpatient Surgery Centers to provide a safer, faster, and more personalized experience than a traditional hospital.

4. An Integrated Commitment

By practicing within the Synergy Health Partners ecosystem, I am able to offer my patients an integrated musculoskeletal home. Having your surgeon, your MRI, and your physical therapist all working “down the hall” from one another eliminates the gaps in care that occur in larger, bureaucratic health systems.

At the core of my practice is a commitment to Academic Leadership. With over 50 published research studies, I am constantly refining my techniques to ensure that my patients receive care that is at the absolute forefront of modern orthopedic sports medicine.
